Narayana Guru Educational Institutions with a difference which is well known for its high academic aspirations. It was established in 1977 by the great social reformer Damodar R. Suvarna to provide quality Technical higher education for the downtrodden and economically poor section of the society. Institution ideals are based on the great saint Brahmashree Narayana Guru gospel or “Educate you may be free” ‘Humanity first’.
Damodar R Suvarna started his venture by starting a Nursery school and then expanded it by opening Primary, High School, Pre-University College, Degree College and I.T.I. One of the remarkable points is that he funded all the projects from his own resources.
Being the founder and Managing Trustee of Sri Niranjan Swamy Educational Trust at Sunkadakatte he has contributed in a big way in the development of this Educational Institution. He was one of the Managing Trustee of Sri Devaraj Urs. Medical College at Kolar and had been in the services as a Trustee of Brahmashree Narayan Guru Trust established in the remote area of Katipalla Village of D.K District. In addition to this, he was also engaged in providing various services to the public such as; to encourage youth writers, he started the Monthly Magazine called “Guruvani '' a model library for the knowledge hunters and for the Medical fraternity a Mobile Medical facility.
As the president of Akhila Bharata Billava Union, he had worked towards the progress of the community, He had been at the helm of many such Institutions, working towards the overall progress of the community and society as a whole. He was a man to reckon within the Social, Cultural, Educational and Literary fields.
He strongly believed that hard work only yields in the long run. He has put his best efforts to succeed in his career life. In the very early days of his career, he worked in Mumbai for the British Company for few years and then he became the manager for the same company. Later he returned to his home town and worked as a manager in the Mangalore Co-op, Society, Mangalore and lead it to greater heights. During this time, he also founded Jyothi Construction Company as a self employment project. Later he became an entrepreneur and founded several companies such as Jyothi Electricals, Roopa Engineering Corporation, Hotel Roopa, Jyothi Plastics, Kalpana Enterprises, Suvarna Industries, Suvarna Estate in Karnataka and he expanded his enterprises even in the neighbouring State, Kerala.
Successful business people are always attracted by political groups or Vice Versa. But Mr. Suvarna was not tempted by the power nor was he associated with any political party. He always gave chances to others, so in the real sense he was the ‘King Maker’.
In his 69 Years of life span he lived a great life and got love and affection from society. He was humble and served society in a great way. He will live in the minds and hearts of all of us. Let his life be a model to the youth.
